The Santa Rosa Convention and Visitors Bureau congratulates our Sonoma County Breweries on winning multiple gold medals from the World Beer Cup 2012 and having “The Worlds Best Beer” as named by the Beer Advocate.
It takes a lot of good beer to make great wine and the breweries in Sonoma Wine Country define great beer. The Santa Rosa Convention & Visitors Bureau is proud to announce that three local breweries won multiple beer awards in the month of May. Santa Rosa’s own Russian River Brewery’s Pliny the Younger was named best beer by the Beer Advocate. Unlike wine rankings created by super tasters or large magazines, the Beer Advocates award comes from a formula using rankings by beer industry experts and members of the community using a Bayesian estimate that pulls data from millions of user reviews (not hand-picked) and normalizes scores based on the number of reviews for each beer. Pliny the Younger is truly a consensus from thousands of opinions. The beer is only made in very small batches and available for two weeks in February. Visitors not only from California and the United States but around the world line up for the ultra-hoppy triple-IPA as early as 10:30 in the morning. According to co-owner Natalie Cilurzo, beer enthusiasts from afar away as Japan and Denmark make the yearly pilgrimage for the release of Pliny the Younger.
Sonoma County breweries also received top awards from the 2012 Brewers Association World Beer Cup. The ninth bi-annual competition boasted the strongest field of entrants on record, with 799 breweries from 54 countries and 45 U.S. states entering 3,921 beers in 95 beer style categories. The judging panel was the largest and most international in the history with judges from 27 countries conducting blind tasting evaluations. Santa Rosa’s Third Street Ale Works took home two awards including the gold medal (top award) in the categories of Classic English-Style Pale Ale and Classic Irish-Style Dry Stout. The Annadel Pale Ale was the top rated beer in the English-Style Pale Ale and Blarney Sisters Dry Irish Stout was the top rated beer in the Irish-Style Dry Stout. Also based in Santa Rosa the Russian River Brewery received a medal for their Supplication in the American-Style Sour Ale category. From Healdsburg and Cloverdale the Bear Republic Brewing Company won the top award for their Black Racer in the American-Style Black Ale category. Black Racer is an aggressively hopped Black India Pale Ale brewed with crystal and roasted malts to achieve layered flavors with very little roast character relative to its dark color.
