From Fiery Caldera to Hidden Gem: A Short History of Sugarloaf Ridge State Park

Join Sugarloaf docents to learn about the history of Sugarloaf Ridge State Park—from its volcanic beginnings 3-5 million years ago, through the indigenous Wappo who tended its forests, fields and streams for over 10,000 years from their village of Wilikos at the headwaters of Sonoma Creek, to homestead settlements and their ingenious adaptations to our isolation and serpentine soils. We will also touch on the park’s natural history which intersects its human history in often interesting ways.

Meet outside the Visitor Center. Tickets are $10 for general audiences, $5 for students, youth (12-17 year olds must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian), Sugarloaf members, Sugarloaf or RFO volunteers, and free for children aged 11 and 10. This event is not for children under 10 years old. All children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Tickets day-of on site are $15 and might not be available. Wear comfortable clothing, appropriate footwear for rocky/slippery trails, and sun protection. Bring at least a quart of water, hiking poles, and if you desire, a snack. Parking fees apply.
